Training

Breathing, Movement, Relaxation and Structure

The core of Systema training centers on Breathing, Relaxation, Movement and Structure (or form). Our core conditioning classes focus on these four basics while building strength in the body and calmness of the mind.

The core conditioning classes are great for beginners and suitable for anyone 14 to 70 years old. Everyone trains at their own pace and to their own capabilities. The pace is deliberately slow to build deep strength and understanding of the body. The goal of this training is to make even the most stressful situations no more bothersome than drinking a cup of tea in the morning.

Breaking structure. Learn to defeat opponents by destroying their structure whether they are armed or unarmed, single or attack in groups. This dynamic class is the foundation of self-defense work. Not to be missed.

Knife fighting. In this class we learn to present the knife from concealment; from static positions, on the move, on the ground and in response to an attack. Learn to use a knife in a professional manor; not just stabbing and slashing but also for stop, hitting, grappling, unwrapping (when held and attacked by multiple opponents), scraping, gouging and more. If you have ever been interested in defense against the knife this is the best class you can take. The best way to learn knife defense is to learn how it is used.

Defense from handgun. Class focuses on defense from the four basic distances of gun attacks; from concealment, out of reach, within reach, and with contact. Also we train from the variations of the three levels of contact; standing kneeling, and prone. With the prevalence of gun violence in America these are crucial skills to have.

Ground fighting* and fighting from the ground. Most fights end up on the ground, one way or another. This class covers locks and escapes, strikes, and movement, ground wrestling with knife and gun, and of course fighting multiple opponents from the ground.

Striking and taking strikes. Weaponize your body. Areas covered: wave strikes, short work, “invisible” strikes, striking multiple targets with one swing. Learn to utilize hands, feet, elbows, knees, forearms, shins, hips, shoulders, chest and head. We will practice the art of taking the strikes through yielding, deflecting, absorbing, and redirecting. Powerful strikes are neutralized by using Russian breath work, and body “annealing” assists in recovery and healing. Harden the body, steel the mind.

Distance and timing. Explore, experiment and discover new responses. Class focuses on yielding movement and the natural, instantaneous counter attacks that are created from your evasions. Drills start with simple pushes and strikes, then builds to defense against knives, clubs and guns. Great introduction class for those who are new to Systema.

Grappling and escapes. Systema offers a shockingly unique approach to applying and defending locks and holds because it recognizes that, “combat is a chaos state that carries an infinite number of challenges and opportunities. The most effective way to prepare an individual to survive this adversity is through the development of adaptability, creativity and autonomy.” V. Vasiliev.

Knives are one of the most common weapons carried and are used in about 20% of aggravated assaults. Knife defense is one of the best ways to train Systema's fundamentals; movement, relaxation, breath and structure. It's a great way of testing your psyche and polishing your soul.

Knife defense- survival movement. This class will focus on body movement, distance, timing and above all else developing a calm mindset free of fear and tension. Movement will start standing and move to mid level, progress to the ground and against walls.

Group Fight- multiple opponents. This class focuses on fighting two and three opponents. Drill progresses from simple movement and breathing exercises to dynamic defense against three opponents armed with knives, guns and sticks. Combat strategy and ethics of using deadly force will round out the class.

Fighting from the clinch. Learn to use the levers of the upper body; wrists, elbows, shoulders, neck and hips to defend yourself and control your opponent. Learn to utilize Short Work, striking into tension to break structure. This class is great because it covers many modalities of fighting.

Ground fighting* and fighting from the ground. Most fights end up on the ground, one way or another. This class covers locks and escapes, strikes, and movement, ground wrestling with knife and gun, and of course fighting multiple opponents from the ground.

Weapon Training

The best way to learn defense against a weapon is to master it. Learn its strengths and weaknesses, find and exploit its limitations. Sticks, knives and guns are the most common weapons used in violent assaults and as so are incorporated into regular training (not actual firearms, training guns only for classroom setting).
